Castles and Palaces

 

Reichsburg Cochem: the magnificent walls are just one of many beautiful castles in the region. Many historical buildings tell stories from the past. Tobogganing: The summer toboggan run in front of the wildlife and adventure park offers an experience for young and old. Adventure seekers can race down the valley on the 800-meter-long cable car, even using a joystick to determine how fast the journey into the valley should go. Daun Wildlife Park with ape enclosure and falconry: The Daun Wildlife Park is located in a 200-hectare forest and meadow area through which an eight-kilometer-long car hiking trail leads. Lava Dome: Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions show that the earth is in a constant state of change. Continents are shifting, mountains are forming and disappearing, volcanoes are erupting, creating new lands or destroying them. Volcanoes are one of the geological phenomena that humans can sense with their senses.

On a 700 square meter exhibition you will find a unique museum of volcanism. Mendig offers three attractions on its "Museum Island": lava dome, museum layout and lava cellar. The tours can be freely combined with one another.

Elms and the Ulmen Maar

 

The Maare of the Eifel originated in a period of 600,000 to 10,000 years of our era, with the Ulmen Maar being the youngest.

Contrary to previous assumptions, the volcanoes have by no means gone out. Recent research has shown that the earth is still working, as evidenced by the hustle and bustle in Wallenborn or escaping gases at Laacher See.

Local divers report that these gases can also be seen in the Ulmen Maar at a depth of 4-5 meters. At first it was thought that because of one or the other place that swimmers frequented, the heat increased towards the bottom, but the opposite is the case. Without a neopore suit, it is impossible for divers to "go" deeper than three meters.

At a depth of 37 m, the church tower of the parish would sink exactly in the Maar. The shape of the lake is more elliptical than round, but you can clearly see the "crater basin" on the opposite forest. A few years ago, the Eifel Association created a nature trail through this forest, where the individual plants and trees and the ecological balance of forest and water are clearly explained on blackboards. Many circular trails invite you to stroll and the high proportion of dead wood gives this forest a rustic character.

While most of the mars, the tuff wall has worn away or disappeared, you can find it in Ulmen in Cochemer Strasse under the cemetery - a very nice example of deposits of Devonian rock.

Incidentally, the Maare are often incorrectly called "crater lakes". The groundwater of a crater lake has collected on the volcanic cone, this cone has been removed from a maar and the water collects in the depression. Did you know?

The Ulmen Maar has another special feature: it is the only body of water without a natural inlet and outlet. The two existing inlets were dug artificially in the 19th century.

The castle ruins, whose walls once reached the shore, are certainly unique. The water is drinking water that supplies up to 70 localities in the area. The water quality is one of the best in Germany!

The volcanic origin of the Ulmener Maares is known, less that of the Jungferweiher, which is separated from the Maar by the motorway.

Only a few years ago, geological drilling confirmed the existence of a second volcano and determined the age. The Jungferweiher volcano is 118,000 years old and much larger than the Maar, because its tuff deposits could be demonstrated up to the Höchstberg. One speaks here of a silted maar that dried up centuries ago and of which only swampy meadows remained.

Until 1942, the area was cow pastures, as can be seen from many photographs.

 

Today the pond is a paradise for ornithologists and anglers, because in the bird sanctuary on the northern edge you could watch wild geese, pelicans and a flock of flamingos, from the common gray and great egret to mallards and great crested grebes, while the Petri disciples indulge in their hobby and already were able to land one or the other giant pike.

You can explore the diversity of the Vulkaneifel and Moselle region on the countless hiking trails, or you can enjoy the warm summer air on an evening cruise. A city tour to Koblenz to the Deutsches Eck or to the Porta Nigra to Trier is always worthwhile. If you still feel like a little exercise, you can let off steam while playing golf or mini golf. Alternatively, you can use the mountains. Not only is excellent wine grown here, you can climb the mountains. A true bouldering paradise can be found in Kottenheim, for example.
